Taking the Leap

Throughout this blog I want to portray the reality of full-time travel and living in a van with a spouse, the beauty and challenges of being immersed in nature, and the wonders of being in the right places at the right times. My intention as a writer is to find common ground with all people. We can all find commonality in the stories of day-to-day life, or the thrill of hitting the road, or the adventure that occurs when you go for what you really want. And that’s what this is really all about- getting into it, whatever “it” is.

One moment that comes to mind is when I was trying to use self-drilling screws on our fiberglass roof for the first time. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get a screw to start drilling without smashing the drill (and my hand) into the side of the van. The screw would fall on the floor and I would get a new one and try again. Sweating, huffing, and puffing, I probably went through 30 screws before I finally accomplished my goal. Gutting the van completely and building a tiny house on wheels came with lots of moments and victories like these. A more serious incident was when we “finished” our build and hit the road. Shortly after being out, we realized that we had problems with our energy system. We had to come back to our parents shop in Missouri to start back at square one. Needless to say, there were moments that were plain hard.

We purchased our van in May of 2021 with the goal of leaving on September 1st, 2021. In reality, we didn’t leave until almost November. And I’m so glad. The timing is right. The road is there and ready. And everything always happens in its own time. I’m being called to see whatever is out there that I’m supposed to see and I’m being called to write whatever it is that I’m going to write.
